Surge in Chickenpox Cases Prompts Vaccination Urgency in UAE

Recent reports indicate a notable increase in chickenpox cases across all age groups in the UAE, prompting doctors to advise heightened vigilance, particularly as temperatures rise. 

Chickenpox, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, presents with symptoms such as fever, sore throat, and a distinctive rash, posing a significant health concern during the summer months.

Factors Contributing to Spread:

Dr. Fiaz Ahamed, an Infection Control Physician at Thumbay University Hospital, highlighted various factors contributing to the surge in chickenpox cases during the summer season. 

Increased outdoor activities, travel, and social interactions create favorable conditions for the virus to spread, especially in crowded places like parks, pools, and children’s camps. 

School breaks and vacations also facilitate close contact among children, further amplifying transmission risks.

Symptoms and Transmission Dynamics:

Physicians emphasized the importance of recognizing chickenpox symptoms, including itching and fluid-filled blisters that eventually turn into scabs. 

Dr. Pavithra V. Reddy from Prime Medical Center Motor City branch stressed the contagious nature of the virus, with transmission occurring through airborne or droplet routes, and highlighted the 10-21 day incubation period.

Preventive Measures and Vaccination:

Dr. Eman Abdul Kader Alabar, a Specialist Internal Medicine at Burjeel Specialty Hospital, Sharjah, underscored the significance of vaccination as a crucial preventive measure against chickenpox. 

Vaccination not only protects individuals but also fosters herd immunity, reducing the spread of the virus within communities. 

Additionally, promoting vaccination compliance and practicing good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, are essential strategies for preventing outbreaks and complications.
