Understanding Iftar Timing and Fasting During Ramadan in Dubai

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims in Dubai fast from dawn until sunset, culminating in the evening meal known as iftar. 

Understanding the timing of iftar and the significance of fasting provides insight into the spiritual practices observed by the Muslim community.

Fasting Duration in Dubai:

On Saturday, April 6, Muslims in Dubai commence their fast at 4:47 am and conclude at 6:41 pm, amounting to 13 hours and 54 minutes of fasting. 

Throughout Ramadan, fasting durations vary slightly each day due to sunrise and sunset timings changes. Last year, fasting lasted approximately 14 hours a day, whereas this year, it’s just over 13 hours.

Variation in Fasting Hours:

The duration of fasting hours is influenced by the position of the sun and the length of daylight, which fluctuates throughout the year. 

Since the Islamic calendar follows the lunar rotation, Ramadan shifts by about 11 days annually, resulting in longer or shorter fasting periods depending on the time of year and location.

Factors Affecting Fasting Hours:

This year, Ramadan coincides with winter for the first time in 24 years in Dubai, leading to cooler temperatures and shorter days. Consequently, fasting hours are comparatively shorter, bringing relief to fasting individuals.

Iftar marks the evening meal that breaks the day-long fast after sunset. Typically, it begins with dates, dried apricots, and Ramadan juices, followed by the sunset prayer. Subsequently, families and friends gather for hearty meals, fostering a sense of community and celebration.

Commencing the Fast with Suhoor:

Before dawn, Muslims partake in suhoor, a pre-fast meal consumed just before sunrise. Many hotels offer suhoor buffets and traditional activities to facilitate the pre-dawn meal experience, enhancing the communal spirit during the early morning hours.

Fasting during Ramadan, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, is a means of spiritual and physical purification.
