Sawt Syria: Exploring Syria’s Vibrant Underground Music Scene

While Syria may not be commonly associated with underground music, the country has seen the emergence of a vibrant and eclectic music scene. 

In a groundbreaking two-part series titled Sawt Syria (Sounds of Syria), Boiler Room and the visionary Sadaa Sound Syndicate take viewers on a journey into the heart of Syria’s club and underground music scenes within and across Europe.

Collaboration with Sadaa Sound Syndicate:

Sawt Syria is a collaborative effort between Boiler Room and the Sadaa Sound Syndicate, a collective of self-organized Syrians deeply immersed in exploring sound and its transformative potential. 

Together, they offer a unique insight into Syria’s musical landscape, shedding light on its diverse genres and cultural influences.

Motherland (Damascus): Part One:

The first part of the series, titled “Motherland (Damascus),” spans six hours and delves into the lives of various artists in the capital city. 

Through intimate interviews and captivating footage, viewers are introduced to the contemporary struggles and cultural milieu that shape the music scene in Damascus. 

The series captures the essence of the city and the artistic practices that define its identity.

Exile (Europe): Part Two:

The second segment, titled “Exile (Europe),” takes viewers on a seven-hour journey between Amsterdam and Berlin. 

This episode explores the lives of 14 artists living in the diaspora, highlighting the intersection of their Syrian heritage, diasporic experiences, and artistic expression. 

Through their stories, viewers gain insight into the divergent influences that shape their music and the depth of the Syrian struggle.

Reflections on Sawt Syria:

Produced by Syrians for Syrians, with editorial guidance from the Sadaa Sound Syndicate, Sawt Syria serves as a meditation on the Syrian condition. 

It reflects over a decade of ongoing war and dispersion, capturing this condition’s abjection and joy. 

Through music, the series offers a glimpse into the resilience and creativity of the Syrian people as they strive for life amidst adversity.
