Shigeichi Negishi, Inventor of Modern Karaoke Machine, Dies at 100

Shigeichi Negishi, the Japanese businessman credited with inventing the modern karaoke machine, passed away at the age of 100 on January 26, following a fall, as confirmed by his daughter, Atsumi Takano.

The Birth of Karaoke:

In 1967, Negishi introduced the world to the concept of karaoke with his invention, initially dubbed the “Sparko Box.” The idea stemmed from a light-hearted jab at Negishi’s singing ability by one of his employees, prompting him to create a device combining a microphone, speaker, and tape deck.

Negishi’s innovative creation allowed individuals to sing along to prerecorded music, paving the way for the karaoke phenomenon. Despite facing initial skepticism and resistance, Negishi tirelessly promoted his invention, ultimately selling approximately 8,000 units over the course of his career.

Cultural Impact:

Although musician Daisuke Inoue was previously credited as the originator of karaoke, Negishi’s pioneering work predates Inoue’s independent invention in 1971. Negishi’s contribution to popularizing karaoke as a global cultural phenomenon cannot be overstated.
