Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy is set to take on a new project: starring in and producing the adaptation of the nonfiction book Blood Runs Coal.
Universal Studios has obtained the rights to the 2020 nonfiction book Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America, which will serve as the basis for the upcoming film.
The film, based on author Mark A. Bradley’s book, revolves around the 1969 murder of mining union organizer Joseph “Jock” Yablonski and his family.
Yablonski’s activism against corruption within the union leads to his tragic demise, setting off a complex investigation into the coal industry’s darker side.
Murphy’s involvement in “Blood Runs Coal” marks his return to the non-fiction genre following his acclaimed portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” a role that earned him his first Oscar earlier this year.
Murphy’s Oscar win places him among the esteemed Irish actors in Hollywood, including Daniel Day-Lewis and Barry Fitzgerald.
In addition to his film endeavors, Murphy will reprise his iconic role as Tommy Shelby in the upcoming “Peaky Blinders” film.
Creator Steven Knight has confirmed Murphy’s return, signaling excitement among fans of the acclaimed British crime drama.
Filming for the “Peaky Blinders” film is set to commence in September, with Knight expressing his commitment to continuing the story that captivated audiences worldwide during the series’ run on BBC and Netflix.
