Gossett Jr. portrayed Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in the acclaimed 1982 film “An Officer and a Gentleman,” a role that made him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, pushing him the first African American from Hollywood to win in that category.

Richard Gere, who starred alongside Gossett Jr. in “An Officer and a Gentleman,” paid tribute to his co-star, describing him as dedicated and talented. Gere recalled Gossett Jr.’s commitment to his character, highlighting his seriousness and authenticity on set.
