The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has unveiled ambitious plans to further enhance public transport infrastructure in Old Dubai.
With a focus on improving accessibility and promoting sustainable travel, the RTA aims to expand the network of dedicated bus and taxi lanes, heralding a new era of efficient transportation in the city.
The upcoming project will see the construction of dedicated bus and taxi lanes spanning 13.1km across six key streets in Old Dubai.
These streets include Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, 2nd December Street, Al Satwa, Al Nahda, Omar bin Al Khattab, and Naif Street.
Upon completion, Dubai’s network of dedicated bus lanes will extend to 20.1km, providing commuters with enhanced mobility options.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors at RTA, emphasized the significance of dedicated bus and taxi lanes in promoting public transport usage over private vehicles.
The project aims to significantly reduce travel times, with anticipated reductions of 24 to 59 percent during peak hours.
For instance, bus journey times are expected to decrease by 59 percent on Naif Street, 54 percent on Al Satwa Road, 50 percent on Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, and 38 percent on Al Nahda Street.
Al Tayer highlighted the project’s alignment with global transportation best practices and its contribution to achieving strategic objectives such as integrated Dubai, fostering well-being, and enhancing public transport riders’ satisfaction.
The initiative aims to create a more sustainable and efficient transportation ecosystem in the city by shortening travel times, improving punctuality, and reducing emissions.
In addition to reducing travel time, the project is expected to significantly enhance bus arrival times.
Projections indicate improvements of up to 56 percent on the 2nd of December Street, 52 percent on Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, 48 percent on Al Satwa Road, and 42 percent on Omar bin Khattab Street.
By extending dedicated bus lanes, the RTA anticipates a substantial increase of up to 30 percent in public transport usage. This shift towards endurable modes of transportation aligns with Dubai’s vision for a greener and more livable city.
Previous phases of dedicated bus and taxi lanes have yielded promising results, including a five-minute reduction in bus journey times and increased satisfaction among riders and drivers.
With existing lanes on key roads like Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road and Naif Street, the RTA remains committed to delivering seamless and efficient public transport services for Dubai’s residents and visitors.
